Teacher TEDx talks

TED is an organisation that encourages us to share good ideas and promotes a love of learning, discussion and thought. Last week 5 brave teachers took to the stage to present their own TED style talks to the students. Subjects included ‘The importance of being Idle’, ‘Feminism is NOT a dirty word’, and ‘Embracing adventure’. It was great to see so many students embracing new ideas and seeing a different side to their teachers.

Students will be giving their own TEDx talks in the new year and the school will be holding an official TEDxYouth conference in March.

Amazing Potato Projects

In Year 5 we have been growing our own potatoes at home. They started off with a ‘seed’ potato, which they suspended in a little water. Over the following weeks they made a diary to record the growth (if any) of their potatoes.

Here are the results from 5T in pictures. Can you guess whose potato had the longest stem?

Jenna

Thank you for all the colouring books and pencils!

A very big thank you to everyone for supporting the Christmas Appeal this year. Representatives from the Student Council will be taking all of them to the Christmas Party at the Good Shepherd Sisters Centre to give as gifts to the children there.

History in Action!

Year 8 students get active!

In learning about the Birth of Rome, Year 8 students have been role-playing the two main stories of Romulus and Remus (the more widely used, popular and better known of the two) and the lesser known story of Aeneas. Students had lots of fun re-enacting the battle scenes and took great pleasure in slaying their classmates!

In the Aeneas story there was also a love story where the Queen of Carthage falls in love with Aeneas only to be later abandoned as Aeneas continues his quest and spiritual calling for power. The love scene cause a little embarrassment among some students, although no kissing or cuddling was allowed, but nevertheless good fun had by all.

Visual Arts trip to Bangkok Sculpture Center

This term Year 12 IB pupils have started a new topic on sculpture. To inspire them, we visited the Bangkok Sculpture Center which celebrates sculptural art of Thailand.

The collection shows work from the ancient Buddhist period to the rise of the modern era which has been influenced by the history, social issues and transitions of Thailand.

The pupils thoroughly enjoyed their day and have come back bursting with creative ideas, so come and see their sculpture exhibition next term!
