A Cultural perspective- Year 12 Artworks

Last term, the Year 12 art students answered these questions within class “what is culture?”, “can a culture own an image?”,  “how can we learn from the culture of others to inform our art practise in a respectful way”, “how can culture be used as a theme or inspiration for contemporary art?” and produced artwork in response. Subjects that the students looked at were racism in education, corruption within governments, colonialism, Buddhism- heaven or hell?, Prostitution, work ethics and our relationships towards social media. They were all very successful and as you can see have produced very intelligent responses to a highly sophisticated starting point.

 

 

 

 

Regent’s hosted 2 booths at the Smile-Carnival

Regent’s Smile-Club have been working tirelessly throughout this academic year assisting in organizing the Smile-Carnival hosted by Operation Smile that took place on April 1st at National Stadium. The Smile-Carnival was a student led charity event where all proceeds went to providing children with surgeries for facial deformities in particular cleft lips and palates surgery. The Regents Smile-Club hosted two booths, the Haunted Maze and the Henna Booth which were the most popular destinations of the night! The students raised 30,000 baht through fundraisers in school to pay for the expenses of the booth.

Last year, the student led charity event raised over 3 million baht and this year the students aim to reach their new personal best.

Welcome to our new boarders!

Copy of football night-1721The Regent’s Boarding community would like to wish our new boarders a very warm welcome. In the girls’ house Mlena, Sylvia, Angela and Shelley have joined us from China and Jimin has joined us from Korea. In the boys’ house, we are pleased to welcome Mike and David from China and Mou from Thailand who is coming back into boarding to spend more time with his friends. We hope all our boarders have a fantastic term.

Planting tomato seeds in Reception!

We begin a new term with a new topic – GROWING. We planted tomato seeds this week and will be taking care of them by watering the every day and making sure that they get enough sunshine. Let’s hope that we can grow some delicious tomatoes!

Coming Up In Boarding

Last weekend’s activity was a paint-balling trip which a small number of our boys attended. I think they enjoyed the opportunity to shoot at staff members! Much fun was had, and importantly no injuries! There was also an impromptu football game between the students and the boarding staff. Although outnumbered and with a low percentage of the possession, I am pleased to say that the staff were triumphant displaying some effective counter-attacking football.

Coming up this weekend we have organised a BBQ social on Friday evening. Saturday during the day is one of our service projects. We have some students from a local football initiative, aimed at keeping young children off the streets, coming to use our facilities. We will organise a small tournament for them and finish with a refreshing dip in the swimming pool. On Saturday evening students will be able to visit the mall for some shopping, to watch and movie, and/or have dinner.

The Golden Jubilee Museum of Agriculture Trip

Year 9 had an education trip to The Golden Jubilee Museum of Agriculture on Wednesday,16th March.


They have gained experience on Thai History and Culture as well as learnt more about Thai agriculture and the life of Thai people in the past.

We hope to grow rice and build a soil house next time!

Partial Solar Eclipse

On Wednesday the 9th of March at 07:38am Regents International School students were lucky enough to view one of the rarest celestial events, an eclipse of the Sun.

The Sun was partially eclipsed for nearly 2 hours and at its maximum coverage, 41% was hidden from our view by the Moon.

Many students took part and viewed the event through pin hole cameras, the camera on their mobile device and most successfully by looking through a CD. All of these methods made it safe see what was happening and gave us all an unforgettable experience.

2016 Bow Seat Ocean Awareness Student Contest

“We invite middle and high school students from around the world to participate in the 2016 Ocean Awareness Student Contest! The theme is Making Meaning out of Ocean Pollution, and it challenges you to research, explore, interpret, and say something meaningful about the connections between human activities and the health of our oceans.

This year, we challenge you to focus on ONE type of ocean pollutionand “make meaning” of it through art, poetry, prose, or film. We would encourage you to connect it with your own life, your own local community, or something else that is personally meaningful to you, but what’s most important is to pick a topic that inspires and motivates you.

This is an interdisciplinary contest that weaves together ocean awareness, creativity, and advocacy. Advocacy means taking a stand for something you believe in. It requires problem-solving skills, assertiveness, and most of all, knowing when to call the world to action.

While learning from science, history, and personal experience will inform your entry, there is no “right” way to do meaningful advocacy. Use your creativity to make art, poetry, prose, or films that inspire and empower a new generation of ocean stewardship!”

FOBISIA Mathematics Competition in Malaysia

On Thursday 28th February, a group of Year 7 and 8 students took part in the annual Fobisia Secondary Mathematics competition. This year it was held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, at the beautiful Saujana Resort. Ms Addis and Mr Corr accompanied the following students: Jessie Choi, Conc Aroonpairoj, Andy Song, Plub Sakulkerewatana. Shree Dubey, Alex Sangthongnirundom, Amey Panjwani and Gain Unakul.

It was an intensive 4 days of mathematics which included individual tests, problem solving, construction of straw bridges, a Maths Trail, maths puzzles and cooperative team challenges. The competition was fierce between schools, which came from all parts of Asia, from South Korea and China in the north to Singapore and Malaysia in the south. Over 200 students participated. This was the school’s first time at competing at the secondary competition and unfortunately, we came away without medals. However, we all learned much from competing with the other young elite mathematical minds in Asia.

There were many highlights to the trip but most special would be the 3 hour night tour of Kuala Lumpur which included the Petronas Twin Towers, Independence Square, the Menara KL Tower and the city centre; and a final night of magician’s act, light show and disco.
