Studying about tourism – Year 13

Year 13 are currently studying about tourism and are looking at the Maldives as an example of a country using tourism to help it develop. We were lucky to have a former colleague of mine currently on vacation there so during the lesson we took the opportunity to Skype her and she dutifully answered our questions about the islands, what the tourism set up is like and even gave us a tour of her accommodation. It was very useful to get that realtime perspective as none of us in the class have ever been there ourselves. This is another great example of technology helping to make lessons more current and engaging for students.

Virtual Geography

In the last week Year 13 students have been going on ‘virtual geography’ trips experiencing some of the things which are generally too far away or too dangerous to see in real life. To supplement their studies of hazards they ‘visited’ a volcano and explored the underground features such as magma chamber, main vents and subduction zone. They saw volcanic bombs and laving erupting all from the safety of the classroom.
We also explored underwater to look at marine ecosystems and even went to the moon.
The possibilities for geography, as well as many other subjects, are limitless and we will be experimenting with this technology across more classes in 2017.

IB FURTHER ORAL ACITIVITY – ENGLISH LANGUAGE AND LITERATURE

IB English Language and Literature lessons have been exciting this week with our Y12 cohort sitting their very first Further Oral Activity. In response to the topic ‘Language in a Cultural Context’, the students performed a role play where they had to demonstrate their knowledge of how our culture, gender, age and ethnicity can determine the way we both utilise and understand language. From YouTube videos, speeches, television debates to ‘mockumentaries’, the students engaged their audience with fine theatrical skills, making full use of props and costumes. The week has been highly entertaining and has left Miss Neill and Mr Anderson full of pride that we have such hardworking and talented students.

IB Learner Profile Competition

Proud 7YH was the winner of the IB Learner Profile Competition. The 10 qualities of an IB learner are as follows: Inquirers, Knowledgeable, Thinkers, Communicators, Principled, Open-minded, Carers, Risk-takers, Balanced & Reflective. I think you’ll agree with us that Proud produced a wonderful response to the difficult task of putting these words in an artistic form.

Eco-Club Recycling Audit

Year 12 and 13 took part in a ecology audit this week, they spent their lunch times collecting any items that could be recycled. Over the course of the week they collected nearly 720 litres worth of trash, over a 36 week school year this would be approximately 130,000 litres. To put that into perspective it would be enough to fill 194 mini cooper cars with trash every year. They will now put together a plan to see how we can reduce the amount of waste we produce and become a greener school.

Model United Nations Bootcamp

On September 23rd 6 Year 12 students visited Harrow International School to attend a boot-camp to help prepare them for the rigours of a real Model United Nations conference.
The MUN is designed to replicate the real UN as closely as possible and gives students the chance to debate real world issues and try to develop real, working solutions to the world’s problems. The six students learned the formality of a UN conference and were each assigned a country to represent. They then researched about their given country before presenting their stance on the issues being debated.
Although it was quite nerve wracking to stand up in front of strangers and debate difficult issues the students all performed really well and found the experience very enjoyable and thought provoking.
Regent’s students will be attending the upcoming 24th Bangkok MUN Conference soon and will be hoping to put in to practice some of the skills they learned at boot-camp.

University Visits

We were very pleased to welcome a representative from the University of British Columbia to talk to our Y12 and Y13 students about their courses and campus life in Vancouver and Okanagan. Regent’s enjoys a great relationship with UBC and we are encouraging our current students to find out more from the four 2016 leavers who secured places there.
Upcoming visits include City University, HK, Carleton University, Canada and University College Dublin, Ireland and don’t miss the talk about how to secure a place to study Medicine at Thammasat University on November 1st at 3pm. Please encourage your son/daughter to show you the information on the Google Classroom about all the university fairs and events that are taking place at school and in Bangkok.

IB work space upgrade!

Good news for our IB students! We are upgrading the IB lounge/work space this term break.
The IB programme can sometimes be very challenging. Which is why it is our duty to provide our students with the right resources for a positive and motivating work environment.

IB pupils attend ‘Quantum Day’

On Tuesday 10th May, three Year 12 IB students attended ‘Quantum Day’ at Bangkok Patana School. Utsav, Veli and Renaka had the opportunity to complete experiments in which they observed light as a particle or a wave. The aim of the day was to decide whether light is a particle or a wave, following in the footsteps of physicists such as Einstein, Maxwell and Planck. All the students really enjoyed the day and had the opportunity to work with students from ten other International schools situated in Bangkok. All took away an added understanding of quantum weirdness and were left pondering whether light is particle, wave, both or neither.
