Boarding Updates (November W3 2016)

Activities are currently very service focused in the Boarding House, with our prefects continuing to lead a Sunday club for local children that live near our campus. For 3 hours they run some English games that promote English speaking, a sports activity and a swim session. A lot of our Year 12 students have been getting involved to enhance their CAS hours for their IB programme. An extra session to try and teach young children to swim has been planned for this Saturday. This kind of service is important as drowning is a leading cause of death in children in Thailand.

Many students have also been busy with cooking activities. They enjoyed a Japanese Sushi cooking session, run by one of the school’s day students last week, and there is a Thai cooking session this week.

In addition our sporty boarders, both boys and girls, have been involved in fixtures. The girls played a football match against KIS this week, and whilst the result did not go our way the girls had a lot of fun, they tackled well and kept possession for much of the game. The boys basketball team will be hoping for better luck when they play a Well’s International School Academy team this coming weekend. A group of boys also went wakeboarding last weekend. For some it was their first time, whilst others were more experienced. A great time was had by all, and there were lots of photo opportunities.

Many of our boarders took the opportunity to celebrate Loy Krathong, floating their Krathong’s in the swimming pool. The krathong’s had been made with the Thai department at school during the day.

For the last 3 weeks we have been lucky to have some exchange students from Japan stay with us. They will return to their school this coming weekend. We have enjoyed having them with us, learning about their school and showing them ours. They have found the exchange to be a great experience, making many new friends and immersing themselves in a new culture.

Boarding Updates (October W3 2016)

Our Armenian boarding students were recently invited by the Armenian embassy to celebrate 25 years of independence. Dressing up smartly they visited a 5 star hotel in Bangkok for an evening of Armenian food and entertainment. Great fun was had by all and much food was eaten – making up for all food they had been missing from home.

Our boarding prefects have initiated and are running a new service activity for our local community. Every Sunday from 12-3pm we are opening our facilities to the children that live on the streets around our school.

Each week a selection of students will play games to teach some basic English, run sports activities, and run a session to teach some swim safety. This is particularly important given that drowning is the leading cause of death in children in Thailand.

The first week was a great success, with 20 local children attending. We hope it continues to grow. A big well done to our Boarding Prefects for running this.

Boarding Updates (September W3 2016)

Our boarding students are well settled into the first term now, and busy occupying themselves with lots of great trips.

Both the Boys’ and Girls’ Houses were busy voting for their Boarding Prefects. A big congratulations to Robert, Jeongwoo, Dechen, and Tsering from the Boys’ House; and Poojan, Migle, Johanna and Tshering from the Girls’ House. We’re sure you will do a fantastic job representing our boarding community.

A group of students went paint-balling, and a fun few hours running around and ducking for cover was had by all.

Soon there is a trip to the famous Chatuchak Market. Busy and hot, but a great opportunity to pick up some bargains!

The boys football teams are also heading over to Ascot School to play a couple of friendly matches. We wish them the best of luck.

Boarding Updates (August W4)

With lots of new faces joining the Boarding House this school year we have been running some ice breaker activities to get to know everyone a little better. The theme is based on the 2016 Rio Olympics, and has been popularly called ‘The 2016 Riogent’s Olympics’. Students have been working in teams first to create their own country and flag, and then to compete against the other teams. There has been a scavenger hunt, a dodgeball tournament, a blindfolded maze, team relay races, and a number of individual events. There are still medals to be won and the medal table looks very close so far!

During the first weekend boarders have the chance to visit Bounce, a nearby trampoline park, and to visit the Mega Bang Na shopping mall.

Boarding (Academic Year 2016/2017) Week 1

All boarding staff would like to give a very warm welcome back to all students, both returning boarders and new boarders. This year we are lucky enough to have a large intake of new boarders from a wide variety of countries around the world – Japan, Korea, Myanmar, Armenia, Bhutan, Netherlands, Lithuania and China.

We started the year with a BBQ , inviting families to attend to meet members of the board and the Boarding House Staff. We were privileged to be joined by our Chairman, Dr. Virachai, who gave a brief welcoming address to start the new school year off.

New Boarders Lounge

We have a new boarders lounge on the 4th floor of our secondary building. Our boarders can relax or study in the school itself before going back to the boarding house.

End of the year Boarding updates

Now we are in the final week of term our activities have been geared towards heading home for the holidays and celebrating a fantastic year together. Student’s asked for a mall trip last Saturday, so they could buy presents for their friends and family on their return home.

The Boys’ House had a BBQ pool party to celebrate the year, with some great food cooked by Houseparent Eddie and GAP staff Daniel. It finished with everyone pushed in the pool. The boys also had a cinema trip instead of prep – as there were no homework deadlines in the last week. There is another BBQ planned for our penultimate day, again organised by our BBQ-master Mr Eddie, for both House’s.

The Head’s of House would like to thank all the staff involved with boarding throughout the year for their hard work and commitment, and to wish all the students a happy and safe holiday. We thank our departing GAP staff for their help and support, and wish them the very best in their future endeavours.

News from Boarding

Last weekend was busy due to a large number of our international boarders being required at school to complete their visas for next year. It’s events like this that make you realise the amazing diversity of nationalities we are fortunate to have in Boarding.

The Saturday afternoon saw a number of our boarders visit the ice rink for some ice skating. Stark contrast to the usual heat of Thailand. Socks and long sleeves definitely required.

This week all of our students have been busy with Round Square Week, taking part in many cultural, service related and active experiences. Coming up there is the small matter of an end of Term BBQ/Party for our boarding community, as well as a final weekend of trips which include the opportunity to visit Bangkok’s largest water park.

Boys’ Boarding Trip to Suphanburi

On the 28th and 29th May some of our boys went on a weekend trip to Suphanburi. This town, about 2 hours from Bangkok, is home to a few of our boarders. We got to spend some time with their families, and in addition we had VIP access and the opportunity to watch a Thai Premier League football match – Suphanburi vs Bangkok Glass.

A big thank you to Phoom and Moss` families for the great time we had on our weekend away.
