TISAC Football Updates – Jan 2017

The Senior’s kicked off the first TISAC boys football festival on Monday 23rd January and performed absolutely brilliantly, winning both their games to put themselves top of the league after the first round of games. They won a tough first match against the host school, beating St Andrews 107 3-2. Confidence was high after that victory, which enabled them to play some impressive football to win their second match against Concordian 4-0.

On Wednesday 25th January the U15 Boys played their opening games of the TISAC Football League. They started fantastically, putting in a great performance to beat Concordian 4-0 in the first game. However in the next match against Charter a couple of lapses of concentration in defense allowed the opposition to score twice and beat Regent’s 2-0. In an effort to make amends for the previous defeat the boys worked hard and created a hat full of chances to impressively beat Heathfield 6-0. With other results going Regent’s way there is currently a three way tie on points at top of the league, however Regents superior goal difference put them top and make for some exciting battles in the next round of matches.

Year 13 Biology students visit Siriraj Medical Museum

On Monday 16th January our final year IB Biology students visited the Siriraj Medical Museum. Here they got the opportunity to experience some of the ideas and concepts from their Human Physiology lessons in a visual, interactive, and often graphic, format.

On show were fetuses at different stages of development, and with a number of birth defects, as well as adult bodies cut to show the different organs and tissues inside! These were quite a shock for our students to see, but a very worthwhile experience.

Year 9 Cultural Masks

Year 9 students have been refining their skills with paint and pencil. They have put this knowledge to use within their studies of masks from around the world.

Terminology Tennis – IBDP History

The Year 12 IBDP History students are having some rest-bite from their intense studies of modern history by engaging in some terminology tennis on the early problems of the Weimar Republic in Germany post-World War One. A good and fun way for them to remember key terms, events and figures from the period, although it is clear that they are much stronger historians than they are tennis players!

ServICE Conference 2017

A group of 16 Regent’s Bangkok students recently attended the ServICE Conference at Bangkok Patana School – this year’s theme was UN’s 17 Sustainable Development Goals.

service-2017

The experience at the ServICE conference was extremely life-changing for me – this is no exaggeration. Before going to the conference, I was hesitant of whether I should go along to tor not after hearing that I would have to be participating with 200 other students from schools around Thailand. I am rather introverted and uncomfortable in places where there are lots of people and I am required to interact with them. However, the icebreaker sessions during the first two days helped me to step out of my comfort zone and enabled me to try and interact with others. I believe that through these icebreaker sessions, I have gradually learnt that everybody who has come to the conference all are outgoing and friendly, I didn’t have a reason to be afraid. As the days went by, I got much more comfortable of being engaging and participating in several discussions and icebreakers; I came to the conclusion that not fearing people was the best way to get to know all these inspiring and creative minds. Besides, for the several keynotes and workshops that were held in the conference, they have inspired me to think about the global issues around the world, and how we are still able to make a change if we actually put our minds to it. The talks motivated myself to take action, and how there are multiple people aiming for these goals to make the earth much more better than it can be today. The passion that everybody has been showing in their keynotes and speeches has motivated me to pursue what I want to achieve, and to also be driven into being proactive with our own communities.

Studying about tourism – Year 13

Year 13 are currently studying about tourism and are looking at the Maldives as an example of a country using tourism to help it develop. We were lucky to have a former colleague of mine currently on vacation there so during the lesson we took the opportunity to Skype her and she dutifully answered our questions about the islands, what the tourism set up is like and even gave us a tour of her accommodation. It was very useful to get that realtime perspective as none of us in the class have ever been there ourselves. This is another great example of technology helping to make lessons more current and engaging for students.

Learning about pigments – Year 12

This week year 12 students are learning about how scientific discoveries have had an influence on art and world culture. Students used chemical reactions to make many of the most famous pigments responsible for great artworks and international land marks, for example they made the verditer green, used to colour the Statue of Liberty; Chrome yellow the iconic hue of the New York taxis and many more. They mixed the pigments with egg yolk to make egg tempera and then painted some Christmas themed masterpieces.

Virtual Geography

In the last week Year 13 students have been going on ‘virtual geography’ trips experiencing some of the things which are generally too far away or too dangerous to see in real life. To supplement their studies of hazards they ‘visited’ a volcano and explored the underground features such as magma chamber, main vents and subduction zone. They saw volcanic bombs and laving erupting all from the safety of the classroom.
We also explored underwater to look at marine ecosystems and even went to the moon.
The possibilities for geography, as well as many other subjects, are limitless and we will be experimenting with this technology across more classes in 2017.
