Boarding trip to Kanchanaburi

This half term a whooping 34 boarders joined staff on a trip to Kanchanaburi. Despite a few very heavy down pours we had quite an adventure, involving both fun and educational activities, whilst appreciating the history of the region.

Mr Goodenough, head of sports, coordinated a game of bubble football, which all got involved in. This sport of bouncing around in inflatable giant balls led us all to be pretty muddy, with laughs all round.

We visited the Erawan falls, where boarders clambered up the levels of the falls and some brave souls took a dip in the fresh water. A trip to the death railway, museum and POW cemetery in town, helped boarders appreciate the tragic history of the area, and the stories of survival from the second world war era.

We rounded up the trip but jetting along the river to a lovely spa, where the boarders relaxed their weary muscles in the thermal waters, whilst some others took their chances at the fish spa, where little fish cleaned their toes!!

The trip was my first as head of girls boarding and gave me a great change to get to know some of the students better, whilst seeing them away from school from this time. I look forward to the next.

Students exchange programme

The Regent’s International School Bangkok has the pleasure of welcoming 8 exchange students from 3 different schools this half term. We welcome Ellie, Jemma, Brooke and Mia from Scotch Oakburn School in Tasmania who will be with us for 2 weeks. They’ve been paired with four of our own girls (Janine, Natalie, Proud, Bell) who will then fly out with the Tasmanian girls and spend 2 weeks in their schools. Also from the Australian region, we have Maddison Weir in Year 10 who’s here a tad longer, until December. She’s from St. Phillip’s College located in the breathtaking town of Alice Springs. Both of these Australian exchanges are made through the Round Square network we maintain continuously. The 3 remaining girls on exchange are from Hakuho Girls High-School in Hokkaido, Japan. This has been running for a while and we welcome Yuna, Ellie and Mizuho and hope they’re going to enjoy themselves. School exchanges allow students to learn more about the world around them and Regent’s encourages this global outreach.

Regent’s Student awarded summer music scholarship at Indiana University Piano Academy

On the Banks of the Wabash, Far Away

Amarin Wexler (Tao) a Year 9 student at The Regent’s International School Bangkok was honoured to be awarded a summer music scholarship earlier this year at Indiana University Piano Academy, one of the most prestigious places to study music in the United States.

With the support of a group of excellent musicians, outstanding university professors and an intensive music program, Tao immersed himself in US culture and had the opportunity to improve his piano-playing technique.

During the 3-week course, Tao had a daily diet of classical master classes, lectures, lessons, concerts, weekly recitals and hours of practising. In the final concert, Tao had a chance to perform a piano duet with his partner, a talented student named Craig Murray.

Tao valued this opportunity to meet other creative people, understand American culture, exchange knowledge and to work with a team to overcome obstacles. He also made many new good friends.

Tao’s summer ‘Silk Road’ also included going to concerts and events featuring global ly-renowned artists such as Stephen Hough, Itzhak Perlman and Yuja Wang.

All at Regent’s Bangkok are extremely proud of him and we wish him continued success in his musical career.

Regent’s student claims 1st Place at the 2017 President’s Cup

Muay, a student in 11RW has recently achieved success in the 2017 President’s Cup. This is a prestigious annual equestrian event held in Pattaya. Despite competing against jockeys of all ages, Muay was able to claim an incredible 1st place in the dressage event and 3rd place in the show jumping event. Muay, who has been riding horses since the age of 6, enjoys pushing herself hard to do well in competitions.

Basketball match: Regent’s v/s Ascot

The girls started the game as they meant to go on, scoring the first 2 baskets. Even as Ascot tried to fight back through the first quarter, Regent’s displayed amazing team work in their passing and supportive play to continue to score baskets.
At half time, the girls hard work on improving their fitness really showed. They outplayed Ascot down the court and worked hard to rebound all shots.
The final quarter was a challenge to maintain focus and concentration. Maryam’s tactics and brilliant communication kept the team together. Lhaki’s supportive play and shooting kept points on the board. Tshering and Migle’s consistent rebounding earned us important possession. Sylvia and Lissa’s hustle down the court kept the opposition under pressure. Sunny and Xinxins accurate passing and decision making provided us with endless opportunities. This truly was a fabulous team performance.
Well done girls!

IED Italian School of Design Workshop

On the 9th of October Year 11 and Year 13 students studying Design and Technology had visitors from the IED Italian School of Design who came to run a workshop at school. The IED Italian School of Design is a tertiary institution that has strong links with industry leaders in fields of Design, ranging from Automotive Design to Jewelry Design and lots more in-between. The representatives from IED Italian School of Design showed the students how to improve their creativity and participated in a creative collage exercise. The students completed the task very well; they enjoyed it and were engaged through the duration of the task. The students were shown skills that are developed at IED Italian School of Design through the different programmes that they run. The workshop was concluded with an inspiring and informative talk about their facilities and the courses that they offer. Hopefully this will lead to more students seeing the benefits of careers based on Design and Technology and the options available from Tertiary Institutions, such as IED Italian School of Design, that lead to fulfilling and well paid careers.

Art Students- Elements and Principles

The Year 12 Art students have made a great start to the year and produced some very exciting work in a very short space of time! Their task was to undertake a piece of work which focused upon an element or principle within the composition of art. They chose ‘Movement’, ‘Balance’, ‘Juxtaposition’, ‘Colour’, ‘Unity’ and ‘pattern’.

Art students- Tonal Drawings

The Year 10 Art students have been learning how to improve their tonal drawing techniques from KS3 into a more mature and sophisticated standard. They have worked incredibly hard to produce these amazing images which can now be seen in the foyer of the Secondary Building.

Global Perspectives Field Trip

As part of the Global Perspectives class, students in Year 10 recently went on a field trip which included visiting religious places. They visited a Buddhist temple called ‘Wat Suthat Thepwararam’,  the Dev Mandir Hindu temple where they had a little Q&A with the priest and learned a lot of things about Hinduism with the help of their fellow classmates who were able to translate for them. They also visited Christ Church in Convent road and had the opportunity to learn a lot of interesting facts and stories from the priest about Christianity. The trip was very educational in many ways and the students have enjoyed the chance of meeting people from different faiths.
