Student received offer at Central Saint Martins in London

Ms. Suksakaow Mahuttanatan (May), a student at Regent’s International School Bangkok, has received an offer to study at Central Saint Martins, University of the Arts, in London, UK.

Central Saint Martins has a world-class reputation, producing famous practitioners in the fields of fashion, fine art, graphic design and architecture. Notable alumni include Stella McCartney, Alexander McQueen, Terrance Conran, Bruce Oldfiled and John Galliano.

May’s time at Regent’s helped her to learn the fundamental skills of art and design. Art teacher, Felicity Harris, said: “May is a very determined young lady, with perseverance and tenacity. She enjoyed using paint and loved creating her own compositions, experimenting with juxtaposing colours and textures.”

May was also privileged to be amongst the artists involved in the creation of the Royal Crematorium.

In the course of her education at Regent’s, May has developed her English skills to a very high standard, opening up to her world of international education. Regent’s is very proud to nurture and develop the talent of a young artist with the potential to achieve at the very highest level.

Mindfulness approaches by Ms. Anna Croucher

There have been some exciting developments at Regent’s International School this term to support the well being of students and staff, focusing around teaching techniques to manage stress and workload as well as supporting calmness, concentration and happiness. The sessions have centred around teaching Mindfulness techniques, an approach that involves bringing the attention to the breath and body, in order to become fully present. Mindfulness has grown in popularity over the last 40 years due to it’s vast range of physical and psychological health benefits. It is increasingly being used in a variety of settings including health care, the army, businesses such as Google and by sports men and women.

During 10 years mindfulness techniques are being used by schools. Sessions are being offered within classes to help students to focus on their work, deal with exam stress, prevent over worrying and manage their time better.

This term Mindfulness approaches have been introduced by the new Student Welfare Officer, Ms Anna Croucher. Ms Anna is trained and experienced in running mindfulness courses both privately and within health and education settings in the UK.  At Regent’s the focus has been on providing both staff and students with an opportunity to try out these techniques.

The IGCSE music students have had 20 minutes of mindfulness weekly, as part of their course, to help them deal with performance anxiety.  Year 12s are also being offered weekly sessions during their tutor time and lunchtime sessions are being offered to IB and staff on a drop in basis.

This is early days, however these steps are encouraged to support the community at Regent’s to maximise well being and reflect the school’s ethos in being committed to the happiness of those at the school .
For more information or to find out more about Mindfulness in schools please contact Ms Anna Croucher  anna.croucher@regents.ac.th.

Year 10 Portrait Paintings

Year 10s have been learning the skills and techniques of using acrylic paint on canvas. As you can see they have all been incredibly successful at mixing colours, values, blending and application of the paint in a more professional manner than KS3.

TISAC Athletics Success!

On Monday 20th, we took a team of 30 plus students to represent Regent’s at the TISAC Athletics competition. Full of anticipation and excitement after a very successful and enjoyable Sports Day, the students were focused and motivated for a good day of Athletics.

The day started strong, with Zak and Layla bringing home gold for the 800m event, showing outstanding pace throughout. The rest of the team followed suit, racking up an impressive medal haul including gold for Ashaank who stepped in last minute to throw the Javelin for the Senior boys team and the U13 boys relay team coming in first place.

The amazing team effort paid off, with U13’s and U15’s teams placing second and the Senior’s placing third. Not bad for a Senior team limited to 8 individuals in total! Overall, Regent’s came away with 30 medals, including 11 gold, 9 silver and 10 bronze.

An amazing performance, and what a fantastic day. Making their teachers and their school extremely proud!

Regent’s Senior Boys are TISAC Basketball League Champions

The Regent’s senior boys basketball team claimed the TISAC league championships today as they overcame tough opposition in the shape of St Stephen’s. Regent’s applied good pressure early on in the game and maintained a 10 point lead for most of the first and second quarter. However with the team feeling the effects of 2 games in 3 days, St Stephen’s began to rally back and by the end of the third quarter the score was tied at 38 a piece. After some carefully selected words to the team by their coach, the boys took to the court determined not to let the game slip through their fingers. The determination and resilience that have been shown all season by this group of players shone through and they eventually won 63-49, and therefore claiming the league without losing a single game. Huge congratulations to the team.

Regent’s student claims 2nd place at International Skating competition.

Huge congratulations to Eve for winning the 2nd place at the International Figure Skating competition.

Our Year 9 student, Eve (Nitchisa Ritprakongchao) has been competing in 2017/ 2018 Asian Junior Figure Skating Challenge (AJFSC) which is an international figure skating competition series jointly hosted by the Chinese Skating Association (CHN), Hong Kong Skating Union (HKG) and Figure and Speed Skating Association of Thailand (THA) under the authorization of the Asian Skating Union during October 9 – 11 2017 in Hong Kong at Festival Walk Glacier.

In Eve’s opinion, Ice skating is a wonderful sport. In fact, she believes that many of us have experienced ice skating before and one of the most undeniable fears is the fear of falling. In every lesson she falls over and over to get the moves right. This teaches her to never give up, no matter how hard she falls, she just has to get up and continue.

One of the most challenging things for a figure skater are the competitions. A figure skater has to practice for months and months before the competition but anything can go wrong at the last minute because of the stress from the surroundings such as the audience and the judges. Therefore, mental stability is highly important in order to keep her focused during the competition.

In conclusion, she truly believes ice skating is a beautiful sport but it is not as easy as it looks. She has learned many valuable lessons from it in order to improve herself in the future.

Boarding trip to Kanchanaburi

This half term a whooping 34 boarders joined staff on a trip to Kanchanaburi. Despite a few very heavy down pours we had quite an adventure, involving both fun and educational activities, whilst appreciating the history of the region.

Mr Goodenough, head of sports, coordinated a game of bubble football, which all got involved in. This sport of bouncing around in inflatable giant balls led us all to be pretty muddy, with laughs all round.

We visited the Erawan falls, where boarders clambered up the levels of the falls and some brave souls took a dip in the fresh water. A trip to the death railway, museum and POW cemetery in town, helped boarders appreciate the tragic history of the area, and the stories of survival from the second world war era.

We rounded up the trip but jetting along the river to a lovely spa, where the boarders relaxed their weary muscles in the thermal waters, whilst some others took their chances at the fish spa, where little fish cleaned their toes!!

The trip was my first as head of girls boarding and gave me a great change to get to know some of the students better, whilst seeing them away from school from this time. I look forward to the next.

Students exchange programme

The Regent’s International School Bangkok has the pleasure of welcoming 8 exchange students from 3 different schools this half term. We welcome Ellie, Jemma, Brooke and Mia from Scotch Oakburn School in Tasmania who will be with us for 2 weeks. They’ve been paired with four of our own girls (Janine, Natalie, Proud, Bell) who will then fly out with the Tasmanian girls and spend 2 weeks in their schools. Also from the Australian region, we have Maddison Weir in Year 10 who’s here a tad longer, until December. She’s from St. Phillip’s College located in the breathtaking town of Alice Springs. Both of these Australian exchanges are made through the Round Square network we maintain continuously. The 3 remaining girls on exchange are from Hakuho Girls High-School in Hokkaido, Japan. This has been running for a while and we welcome Yuna, Ellie and Mizuho and hope they’re going to enjoy themselves. School exchanges allow students to learn more about the world around them and Regent’s encourages this global outreach.

Regent’s Student awarded summer music scholarship at Indiana University Piano Academy

On the Banks of the Wabash, Far Away

Amarin Wexler (Tao) a Year 9 student at The Regent’s International School Bangkok was honoured to be awarded a summer music scholarship earlier this year at Indiana University Piano Academy, one of the most prestigious places to study music in the United States.

With the support of a group of excellent musicians, outstanding university professors and an intensive music program, Tao immersed himself in US culture and had the opportunity to improve his piano-playing technique.

During the 3-week course, Tao had a daily diet of classical master classes, lectures, lessons, concerts, weekly recitals and hours of practising. In the final concert, Tao had a chance to perform a piano duet with his partner, a talented student named Craig Murray.

Tao valued this opportunity to meet other creative people, understand American culture, exchange knowledge and to work with a team to overcome obstacles. He also made many new good friends.

Tao’s summer ‘Silk Road’ also included going to concerts and events featuring global ly-renowned artists such as Stephen Hough, Itzhak Perlman and Yuja Wang.

All at Regent’s Bangkok are extremely proud of him and we wish him continued success in his musical career.
